Memphis Pride Fest in 2022 marked a return to full-scale, in-person celebrations after two years of pandemic-related adaptations. The 47th Annual Memphis Pride Fest, held on June 4–5, 2022, carried the theme “The Reconnection” and brought together over 50,000 attendees, making it one of the largest Pride events in Memphis history. The festival took place at Robert Church Park, featuring two entertainment stages, over 130 vendors, a Kids Zone, and a VIP Lounge.
The Pride Parade, presented by First Horizon, featured over 3,000 participants and 110 units, with spectators lining 4th Street, Beale Street, and Riverside Drive. A $1 entry fee was introduced for the first time, allowing the festival to be classified as a private event, which provided organizers with greater control over the space and security measures.
The 2022 Grand Marshals represented a diverse range of advocacy and leadership. Regina Hillman, a law professor at the University of Memphis, played a key role in Tanco v. Haslam, the case that challenged Tennessee’s ban on same-sex marriage and contributed to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. ARTavius Veasey, an actor, author, and advocate for Black LGBTQ+ representation, used his platform as editor-in-chief of ARTist Feature Magazine to elevate Black LGBTQ+ voices in the arts. Ray Rico, a Latinx entrepreneur and founder of Ray Rico Freelance, was recognized for his contributions to LGBTQ+ media visibility and business advocacy in Memphis.
With its expanded programming, record-breaking attendance, and renewed sense of community, the 47th Annual Memphis Pride Fest symbolized resilience, progress, and the enduring strength of Memphis’s LGBTQ+ movement.
