Memphis Pride Fest in 2021 continued its hybrid format to accommodate ongoing pandemic-related challenges while ensuring the LGBTQ+ community could still come together to celebrate and advocate. The 46th Annual Memphis Pride, held on October 9, 2021, carried the theme “Live and in Color 2.0,” reflecting both resilience and adaptability in an era of uncertainty.
The festival featured a mix of virtual and in-person events, allowing broad participation while prioritizing health and safety. The Pride on Wheels Caravan Parade, first introduced in 2020, returned as a centerpiece of the celebration, with over 100 vehicles decorated in rainbow colors rolling through the city. Other events included Drag N Drive, virtual community discussions, and live-streamed performances, creating opportunities for both engagement and celebration.
The 2021 Grand Marshals were honored for their advocacy in healthcare and education. Elijah Townsend, a Memphis native and culinary professional, was recognized for his ongoing support of LGBTQ+ youth and organizations, using his platform to promote inclusivity in food spaces and community outreach. Dr. Shawn Hayden, a healthcare advocate, was celebrated for his work in improving access to culturally competent LGBTQ+ healthcare, particularly in HIV/AIDS prevention and transgender healthcare services.
Despite the limitations imposed by the pandemic, Memphis Pride Fest 2021 showcased the strength and determination of the LGBTQ+ community. The hybrid model ensured that Pride could continue, offering both in-person and virtual spaces for connection, celebration, and advocacy. The event reinforced the ongoing mission of visibility, inclusivity, and progress, demonstrating that Memphis Pride remains a vital and evolving part of the city’s culture.
