By 1997, Memphis Pride had solidified itself as a major event in the city’s LGBTQ+ history. The 22nd Annual Memphis Pride, held on June 14, carried the theme “Celebrating Generations of Pride,” a tribute to the diversity of the community across different age groups. This year’s Pride was defined by two major moments—the debut of the city’s first large rainbow flag and the honoring of Tim Sampson as Grand Marshal.
Inspired by the mile-long Stonewall 25 flag in New York, Memphis’s first giant rainbow flag became the parade’s centerpiece. Constructed by volunteers from the local LGBTQ+ community and supported by Holy Trinity United Church of Christ, the flag symbolized solidarity, visibility, and a growing confidence in public Pride celebrations. Though its weight made it difficult to carry, adjustments in future years ensured it remained a key feature of the parade.
The selection of Tim Sampson as Grand Marshal highlighted the role of media in LGBTQ+ advocacy. As the editor of The Triangle Journal, Memphis’s leading LGBTQ+ newspaper, Sampson was instrumental in amplifying queer voices, covering critical issues, and documenting the struggles and triumphs of the local LGBTQ+ movement. Through his journalism, he helped shape public perception and advanced the fight for acceptance in a city that was still evolving in its approach to LGBTQ+ rights.
The Pride festival continued to expand, featuring entertainment, educational booths, and social activities that emphasized intergenerational unity. A variety of age groups were included in the parade, reinforcing the theme that Pride belonged to everyone—those who had fought for decades and those just beginning to find their voice.
The 1997 Memphis Pride was more than just a celebration—it was a statement of unity and progress, proof that LGBTQ+ Memphians were not only building on past struggles but also laying the foundation for future generations. As the flag billowed through the streets and the parade moved forward, it was clear that Pride in Memphis had grown into something lasting, something powerful, something unstoppable.
